POOR HOUSE and WORK HOUSE

Charlton Mackrell used to have a Poor House, opposite the church.
The Langport Union Work House was in High Ham parish, just south of the main road into Langport.    Further information on both is available here.

SHOPPING in THE CHARLTONS
  -  a list of some 19th - 20th century shops etc in Adam and Mackrell.

Until recently we had 2 pubs plus 2 shops and a garage, but now there is only one shop (the Post Office in Charlton Adam) and no garage.  Regrettably, in summer 2008 the historic "Greyhound Inn" in Charlton Mackrell also closed, so there is  now only one pub - the "Fox & Hounds" in Adam.  Some information about the "Greyhound Inn", now called Alehouse Lodge, is available to download from the 'Houses' page.
